报告摘要:The construction industry continues to face fundamental challenges such as stagnant productivity, labor shortages, safety risks, quality inconsistencies, cost overruns, and increasing pressures for sustainability and digital transformation. This lecture presents modular and offsite construction as critical solutions to these long-standing issues by transitioning construction from fragmented, on-site activities to integrated, industrialized processes. Emphasis is placed on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, robotics, and Physical AI in enabling a fully digital and intelligent construction lifecycle—from AI-driven design optimization and engineering analysis, through automated and robotic manufacturing of modular components, to intelligent on-site assembly and long-term maintenance. AI-based design and engineering tools support standardization, performance optimization, and constructability, while automated manufacturing and robotic assembly enhance productivity, precision, and worker safety. Physical AI further enables real-time perception, learning, and adaptive control of construction systems, supporting efficient assembly and predictive maintenance of modular buildings. Drawing on research experience and emerging practices, this lecture highlights how the convergence of modular construction, offsite construction, AI, automation, and robotics will redefine construction workflows and shape the future competencies of civil engineers.
